Heat Training
Thoughts & Concerns

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding the idea of heat training. Is it damaging, is it healthy, how do you do it? Well you know me, I love bringing clarity to confusing situations. Let's get started...

What is Heat Training?

Heat Training is the process of getting your curly/coiled strands accustom to being straight, opposed to being in their natural state. This process is often performed on hair that has not been chemically relaxed.

Reality check! Heat training is not a miracle cure. If you get caught in the rain, or go to work out, your hair will most likely revert back. That's the life of a press and curl girl.

How to Heat Train

Products: During the heat training process, you might have to use a different set of products than you would use after your hair has been heat trained. Smoothing hydrating shampoos, conditioners and leave in conditioners, heavy creams and oil will make this process much easier. Here are a few that I suggest:

Joico Smooth Cure System: I used this system when I traveled to the Western Caribbean this past fall. My normal hair care routine couldn’t stand up against the heat and humidity, but this system did. My strands stayed smooth and straight in 100 degree whether and 90% humidity.
Mizani Thermasmooth System: The shampoo and conditioner in this line helps to prepare your strands for a frizz free style.
Lustrasilk Hair Culture Solution: This is my summer secret weapon. I've never researched what's in, and as long as my hair stays healthy, I don't really care. The key to using this product is to spray it onto damp hair before blow-drying. Be careful not to over-do it though. Think heavy on the roots, extremely light on the ends. By heavy, I mean 3-5 sprays. By light, I mean 1-2sprays.
KeraCare Essential Oils: This oil is a bit heavy for most hair types, but it helps to keep strands from reverting after styling. The key is to apply a small amount evenly throughout your dry strands before styling, not before straightening.
Mizani Rose H2O Hairdress or Butter Rich Hairdress: The Rose H20 is heavier, but both will work well. This will help to give you a smooth finish, guarding against the humidity and other reverting elements.

Tips: The following tips will have your hair heat trained in no time:

The more moisture you put into your hair during the styling process, the less likely it is for your hair to revert back. Don't over do it. Pilling on the product will just leave you with a heavy, oil mess.
Use quality styling tools. A high quality ceramic iron evenly distributes heat over all of your strands and doesn’t dry them out. Leaving your hair softer, smoother, straight, yet healthy.
Protect your hair. The training process can be a bit hard on the hair. Use creamy heat protecting leave-ins to make sure that you retain the health of your hair.
Take your time. Taking small sections will ensure that each strand gets straight.
Be Patient! The first few times that you style your hair, it won't be anywhere near perfect. However, things will certainly get better each time.
Keep your style by wrapping your hair, securing it with a satin scarf at bedtime.

Heat training doesn't have to be a damaging process. I have even managed to keep my natural curl pattern after years of straitening. Be sure to use these tips and incorporate a few of the products to ease the process of training your strands. Happy training!
